Waking up to a new year . . .

As the tired old year drew to its last few quiet hours

It was time to remember & to say fond farewells,

to be thankful for the many magical moments we had shared.

Time to reminisce over different paths my feet had wandered,

here and there and back again! Paths that led to . . .

my becoming fully self employed & my very own boss!

To a new wee cottage tucked amongst the Galloway hills.

To discovering so many wonderful & new like minded souls

who taught me how to grow and led me off on new adventures.

To my finding at long last, my quiet space within.

A year filled with many lessons learnt.

I woke sleepy eyed into 2012, wanting to savour this new beginning,

this year in which i am 50, I never thought I would look forward to that!

But I do and I am. I have planned out my years goals for home, work & play.

I have happily polished up my business plan, until it almost glows!

Finally I am ready, fingers itching, to tumble back into my studio.

So, I'm here, I'm ready as I will ever be. Its good morning to you 2012!

I look forward to getting to know you so very much better.

May we become the best of friends. I am hopeful & excited too!

I wonder what magic you will begin to reveal!

Oh, i almost forgot, but however could I!

A very new wee soul came into our lives just before Christmas

a tiny pup who we already adore. Here to meet you, is Poppy!

(Can you imagine my delight when I discovered her

pedigree kennel name is Lady of Magic! It was meant to be)

Moments in time. Where do they go those seconds, minutes, hours& days?

I lift my eyes& see that they have tiptoed past whilst i was busy elsewhere.

Rainy Augustslid into September, a richly hued October fell into November

Like old friends, the seasons pass by, say hello and thengo on their way again.

I seemed to missso much, spending hours tired & frustrated, running in circles.

Too much todo, too little time. Knowing somethingwas missing, but what?

Then in midSeptember, oh lovely synchronicity. . .(do you ever experience it?)

. . . one day, I chanced upon two intriguing e-coursesthat just called out to me.

Essence of Wild’s “Barefoot breathing” run by Jackie Stewart & Jason Smalley

and the “Relation-ships” course run by the lovely Jackie Walker.

I knew Ihad to sign up for both, feeling excited & hopeful & nervous

unsure of what I would unearth, but instincttelling me to give it a try.
I made a decision & took 6 weeks out, to emerse myself in all I found!

I’m so glad Idid, with such inspirational words & guidance, I have learnt so much!

I slowly unravelledmyself, found better understanding, new direction & purpose.

I was taughtto re-connect with myself & Mother Nature, for I had forgotten how.

I learnt to build calmness & balance into my days, the very things I saw I had lost.

Thecourses were such a wonderful gift & I feel I look at the world with fresheyes.

I can’t saya big enough thank you to the wonderful folk who guided me on this path!

After I finishedthe courses I set out to find ways to keep this new found balance.

Being aVirgo I loved doing this, designing a personalised monthly, weekly & daily planner.

Making slots in my day for the important things; home, family, business, creative & me time.

I sorted& organised & tidied my life, my head, my studio, my computer, our home and us!

Then I found Julia Cameron's "The Artists way" & am working through her course now!

I write morning pages (as Julia suggests), loving the flow of words, finding answers & insight.

I am learningnew habits to ensure I don’t “forget” the lessons I have learnt.

Meditation brings me peace & calm and Iam back to yoga, after years away.

I write down my "5 precious things" a day, remembering to be thankful.

Make time for100 deep breathes in nature, soaking up the beauty of it all.

I spied aweasel playing under a bramble, a delicate deerin the early morning

and i woke extra early to watch thepink hues of a sunrise light up the world.

I am now somuch more aware of the passing of the season & the days.

Iam looking forward & planning, with lots of new projects in the pipeline.

An idea that in the future I hope to share, creatingways & means to enable folk

to find the time to fulfill “all” theparts of themselves as much as possible.

We are getting ready for long winters evenings snuggling by the fire and Christmas too!

I have a kitchen tofinish decorating, mood boards to make for our garden & living room .

Bulbs to plant, an art doll to start & . . . . oh but timeenough to share these things another day.

And there was me thinking i hadn't been up to so very much lol!

Just remember my lovelies,

take time out to slow down & notice the small precious things every once in a while

folklore & finery,

I hunted down treasures whilst away up North

One day I found wondrous snippets of folklore in Inverness museum

top left - a medieval spindle worn to protect against the evil eye,

centre, elf's arrow pendant made from a pre-historic flint, protection against faeries,

folk once believed these were made by faeries who weren't able to use metals.

The ladle, used to remove the evil eye would contain a piece of silver,

a person suffering bad luck would drink from this standing under a bridge.

The tiny charms, bottom right were sewn into the clothes or the bedding

of children protecting them from the faeries & changeling babes.

these also caught my eye, medieval ring brooches, the Achavrail armlet

and treasure found in 1875 by a lass in a field in Croy.

Another day I crawled down the ancient entrance tunnel into Corrimony Cairn

a chambered tomb or passage grave, built four thousand years ago

I felt its ancientness seep into my very bones as I looked out

at the silent stones standing guard in a circle .

Most moving, the Munlochy clootie well, an amazing sight, a myriad of "cloots"

left by visitors who have visited this place wishing for healing for a poorly loved one.

So many wishes! To make a wish you walk sunrise around the well three times,

splash water from the well onto the ground and say the wish. (Cloot means cloth).

The wells use possibly derives from "the power of water in Celtic tradition"

I am ever fascinated by these folk who's customs & beliefs I have seen

who lived in a world filled with wonder & fear and feel even more that

these are the stories I want to keep alive, want to work into my paintings.

tiny wooden houses tucked amongst the trees

( child sized & perfect)

a loo with a heather covered roof!

made in the forest school classroom

Gruffalo houses for tiny folk
(I so wanted to crawl in)

and my favourite the round house,

a Celtic bronze age dwelling made from stone, hazel & reeds

(i just had to sit inside & let my imagination fly)

Abriachan Forest Trust

"In 1998 the community purchased 534 hectares of forest and open hill ground from Forest Enterprise. Since then, as a social enterprise, the Abriachan Forest Trust has managed this land to create local employment, improve the environment and encourage it's enjoyment by the public through a network of spectacular paths, family suited mountain bike trails and innovative education opportunities."

A wonderful project with such exciting teaching and learning opportunities for all.

It took me back to remembering. . .

the smell of damp earth, the feel of raindrops through the trees
and the memory of all things foresty x

Into the highlands and a path unseen . . .

Where have we been . . .

in the hills in a tucked amongst the trees tiny log cabin

venturing out and exploring the wild & beautiful Scottish highlands

discovering the sights of Drumnadrochit & Abriachan forest,

the faerietale places of Glen Affrick and of course Loch Ness.

Under incredible skies, both sun tinted and stormy.

Such feasting for our eyes, so peaceful and unspoilt.

We have walked & talked, been rested & invigorated,

felt ourselves connecting back to nature & things that matter most.

Precious and much needed time out, the why is told below.

I noticed a recurring item on Facebook recently that intrigued me, folk posting "Depression is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign that you have been trying to be strong for too long. Put this on your status if you know someone who has or has had depression. . .” as I read more I was moved to see so many eloquent responses on this so misunderstood subject.

I used to think my "blues" (depression) was a huge sign of weakness, didn’t want a soul to know fearing I would be judged. I didn’t remember the stresses in my life that had pushed me into that dark place; I should have given myself a pat on the back but no, I though “weak” and fought hard against it, making things so very much worse.

Many years later, I have slowly learnt to stop fighting, and months can pass when I completely forget my "blueness”. It still creeps up on me from time to time, I land with a bump and realise I forgot to be on the lookout, hadn't noticed I was pushing myself to hard, the growing lethargy, disconnection, disinterest.

I am learning that this “blueness” makes me who I am. When I have a patch of "hyper" it is amazing! I overflow with inspiration, ideas & energy, my eyes are wide open, I am in a good place, the world shines.

I have learnt that when the bump happens I have to step aside, be quiet, still & small & slowly make my shape again, hence my "time out" such as the post above. I have learnt to recognise the things that keep me afloat; walking in nature, meditation, my “5 precious things a day”, writing and re-pacing myself. Remembering & accepting again my own boundaries, ( though this is frustrating at times for a stubborn soul like me) I always emerge finally, blinking into the sunlight , knowing that each step makes me stronger, as I re-assess & start to love life all over again.

In all its shapes & forms, depression is very real (though I have met many who would disagree), it is scary and it can be debilitating. I have written this post for all those out there who recognise this place, we need to remember we are not alone, not insane, just a little crazy at times. Hold your head up high and say this is me.

A bit of a serious post this, but a subject very near to my heart. I see and hear of so many friends & family who have found themselves at some time in this place. It affects 1 in 4 of us at some time, yet it is still so misunderstood. I am fighting the cause ;-)

ps: Whilst we were away "5 blog" passed its 3rd birthday . . . already! Wherever does time fly to! Thank you to all, it has truly been a wonderful, moving, unexpected journey and sharing it with such lovely folks as yourselves makes it even more precious. x x x

Kirkcudbright art & Crafts trail . . .

In the nearby town of Kirkcudbright from Friday 29th July - Monday1st August
there is to be held the 8th annual Art & Crafts Trail.

Started by two very dedicated ladies Pauline Saul and Vivien Dania

it is an event to show the works of many local artists & makers.
( My "Carrick Mermaid" was chosen to grace the trails map. )

I am exited to say that this time next week both Mom & I

shall be sat amidst our paintings, prints, cards & crafty things

in the lovely space we have been allocated on the trail. . .

in the newly re-furbished, light & airy basement of

"Rhubarb", run by Daughter & Mum, Carolynne & Brenda

situated at 1a Castle Street, opposite McLellans castle.

I have been entranced & distracted

by such visions still dancing in my head!

For i have whiled away days in a quiet corner of Turkey

with my dearest mom, lovely sister & little nephew,

discovering such days of rest, stillness & quiet.

The smell of sweet scented pines & the sound of chirping crickets

the vibrant colours of the flowers & the warmth of the local folk.

So many lasting memories, so many extraordinary sights we saw.

The ghost town of Kayakoy left me wanting to know so much more,

with its elegant, crumbling church & ruins of homes

a reminder of the saddest of times not so long past.
( i read "birds without wings" soon after,
alternately laughing & weeping through this tragic tale)

At the ruins of Kaunos we walked the steps of ancient Romans,
and gazed on mighty rock-hewn tombs far above our heads .

The hours ticked so much more slowly, or so it seemed to us,

time to re-discover old favorites & unearth new ones.

Slowing down & catching up.

the biggest thank you to my precious sister for so many cherished moments,

for the wonderful time away that then allowed me to remember afresh

why i love coming home to these greenest of Scottish hills

gothic splendor, times past & present. . .

On travels to see my lovely eldest lass in Bristol

there was time to visit awe inspiring Gothic splendor

St Mary Redcliffe church, Bristol

with its intricate lace like patterns, carved in stone so long ago

We found glowing stained glass, the sun streaming through

throwing jewel colours onto stone floors, worn by many feet.

How many generations past have gazed at these windows
trying to conjure the ancient tales they may tell?

Green men & gargoyles were tucked away

waiting, silently, to be found again.

Unrecognisable beasts curled ever in waiting

guarding the entrance against long forgotten evils.

Tortured souls gazing sightlessly from their broken columns
for how many moons have they looked down upon the throngs?

and waiting to inspire; bright, medieval colours & patterns

in painted panels, vaulted ceilings & mosaic floors.
I pondered the lives of the folk who created these so long ago.

Inspired i was indeed, by the intricacy, the brightness, the detail.

Inspired enough to finish, at last, my stained glass inspired foxy painting.
Thinking on the passing of time, as i dipped my brush in deepest blues.
Remembering those treasures folk have left behind, shrouded in mystery.
As i added golden stars to my midnight skies, i gave thanks.
Thanks that we have these treasures still, linking back to the past,
to our ancestors, their skills, their imagination, their patience.

I am fleeing away far overseas, for a wee while to visit my precious niece,

Taking time out, my sister & I, to holiday together with our lovely Mom,

The last time we all were together like this i would have been 16/17?!
How time does fly!!

I have been away forever, for we have been a-settling into our newest wee home!

One with wide open spaces & views, space to breathe & breathtaking big skies.
Such a feeling of peace & quiet we have discovered here away from it all.
The loveliness of it all still hasn't quite sunk in yet

Surrounded by forest & the Galloway hills, the sea just a stones throw away,

we have been watching the weather rolling in across the distant hills,
have been discovering faeries hidden in the woods, can you see above
(whoever lived here before loved these wee folk too, they are dotted about).

Deer greet us as we drive up the lane & a woodpecker feeds in the garden,

So many butterflies & bees already & a huge big hare who lives in the field .

Several new hares have entered into our home too
i want to share the work of 2 artists whom i greatly admire.

My wooden hare (below) was made by the lovely Karen Davies,
who's work I 1st discovered in my early blogging days.

Her magical blog "Moonlight & Hares"
is filled with lovely images, paintings & such soothing music.

A while ago, whilst looking for treasures for faerietale blog,
I came across the amazing work of the "Hairy Growler".
Lez lovingly fashions treasures from old silver coins & spoons,
it is re-cycling at its very best & so much to choose from!

After much deciding I bought my Hare necklace (see above)

I love the added personal touches Lez includes,
like Mr O & my initials engraved on the back of the hare.

There is so much more I have to share, like . . .
all the new & exciting arty happenings but i shall save that till next time,

Late to the table . . . or blogging

I am ever late to the table ;-) but picking up the threads, i have belatedly, followed a tapestry of comments woven across the web recently, about blogging, the need & the reason. A fascinating subject, i found myself nodding in agreement most vigorously.

Words very much worth dipping in and out of from such wonderful folk as Rima at “the Hermitage”, Christina in her “mermaids attic” & Terri Windling at her “drawing board”. I am compelled to add my own voice, such an impact has it had. Blogging began for me as a way to record the journey of re-discovering my arty self.

I certainly did not expect to tumble, Alice like, right into the heart of a magical land.

A hitherto, hidden treasure, a web of creative folk, discussing, encouraging, sharing

Rima's blog being one of the very first i became spellbound by. This ethereal sharing is an altogether new & rewarding experience, a humbling thing;

it draws the world closer. As Christina says, it is difficult in this “crazy busy world” to have regular conversation with like minded folk. I find it scarily difficult in the "real" world to "sell" my ideas, my work. Yet here, within this community of bloggers from far flung corners of the world, most of whom have never met, i have made wonderful connections, shared many varied passions & inspirations & found such vast encouragement that i have begun at last to find courage.

Blogging i believe requires its own kind of self belief & bravery, and as Terry Windling says in her post here, we have to decide where to draw our own line, how much or little of ourselves do we share. Non blogger friends gasp in horror at the thought of opening up to strangers, but blogging is to me essentially about being yourself, staying true.
It has been said from reading my blog it seems I live “a wonderfully peaceful & perfect life”. Yet life is never as it seems & this comment set me a wondering, then i read Christina’s words on why we blog here & i remembered that i have draw my own line, why i share only the good bits & pieces, the smiley & precious thing in my life! As a lass whose muse at times dips her toes into the unexpected “blues”, i set myself ways to balance my days. This became the “5 precious things” I remember at the end of each day, in turn this became the name of my blog, a place for peace & calm & loveliness, for myself as well as folks who find themselves here. For me blogging has become another creative way to express myself, as Rima says another “art form” and one which i hope to long continue in. Through blogging i have explored & discovered a deeper sense of self, and a feeling of fitting in; making so many connections. Now as i work away in my little studio, i am reminded through these connections that we are all delicate stitches in the rich, detailed tapestry of creativity that this "blogging" connects us to.

Galloway scenery, sculptures & sunsets

Needing a taste of the sharp frost filled air

we set off exploring, into the heart of the Galloway forest. As our eyes soaked up beautiful colours,

i breathed deep & felt the stresses of the week slide away.

We discovered hidden treasures, "the Quorum",

sitting silently, carved faces built into the old stone dyke.

Now beautifully weathered & looking as if they have always belonged.

We watched clouds race as we climbed to Murray's monument

& listened to the song of tumbling water at the "grey mare's waterfall".

At the waters edge unusual patterns, in sparkling jewels of ice.

Darkness settling over the hills told us it was time to head home

with happy hearts & a deep sense of peace now restored.

I have been having a great deal of fun printing my own cards,

choosing images, designing labels & deciding on packaging.

Each card has relevant snippets of folklore & traditions on the back.

Finished at last, the first ones are in "mythweaver" my etsy shop,

I shall be gradually adding more designs as the weeks go by.

marrakesh adventures . . .

In the shivering coldness of December past,

my lasses & i excitedly set out upon an adventure

for some rare precious time & togetherness.

We brushed down our dusty French & headed

for warmer climes to long dreamed of Marrakesh.

Our 1st evening found us in the old part of the walled city,

outside a solitary studded wooden door, behind which

we found the warmest of welcomes at the Riad Cannelle
That evening we fell asleep to strange distant rhythmic drumming,

later we learnt it was the local children gathered in the street,

they all play the djembe, a traditional Moroccan hand held drum.

We woke to the soothing sound of trickling water- the fountain,

the singing of birds & the adhan, call to prayer calling over the roof tops,

After a breakfast of Moroccan pancakes & mint tea, see above, top left

(see also the array of deliciousness we tasted on our travels).

we soon set foot outside the riad straight into another world,

full of sights & sounds & smells, colour & noise & busyness.

Stepping right into the heart of the bustling souks.

A labyrinth of alleyways, we wandered, getting completely lost,

past stalls stuffed with carpets & lanterns, slippers & jewels,

stopping now & again to try our hand at haggling for goods!

After such an experience some quiet time was needed . .

so we made our way to the Saadian tombs dated 1578-1603

to gaze in wonder at intricate stucco work,

beautiful carvings in cedar wood & marble.

But best loved of all for me was . . .

. . . our visit to the El Bahia Palace,

a wonderful rich example of 19th century eastern architecture.

It took 15 years to complete, i can see why.

Each surface covered with carvings & paintings so detailed.

I could have happily wandered there for hours, just looking!

Our time was filled with adventures too many to tell all here,

and at the end of 4 days we three tired but happy travellers

heading home, back to the snow & a wonderful Christmas,

full of wonderful memories to cherish.

to be back in the peace & quiet & beauty of home

The snow has thawed & greenery is peeping through

as, at last i step out into the world again

after chritsmassy hibernations.

My thoughts half filled with delicious memories

cosy fires, candles & candy canes,

pantomine laughter, presents galore.

Precious family times indeed.

I step excitedly back into my dusty studio.

A world of inspiration awaits me here.

Books to be read, threads to be stitched

collected treasures waiting to be drawn. A backward glance at the old year now past

and a while to reflect on ups & downs

Blessings to be thankful for & lessons to be learnt.

Then i turn my head and its foward i go

a list of to do's as long as my arm.

To spend more days painting & sketching

is there at the very topmost!

Last year was so filled with "other" things.

Now, old Sketchbooks full of odd scribblings

patiently wait & new projects jostle in line.

So excited, my etsy shop is just about finished!

i have been snuggled in my studio

i have been mixing deep & glowing colours

and christmas dancing angels, to bring smiles of joy

i have also been amending disasters, this last month

my red & unruly hair seems to be a thing

hairdressers have never been able to tame,

by cut or colour, as you see below, sighs

at last i am relenting & returning to my natural untamed state

do other redheads have the same problem i wonder?

Palaces & Peacocks . . .

Time out was so very long overdue

but at last we found ourselves travelling

North to Perth, the fair city, ready to explore. The beautiful sandstone "Scone Palace"

(pronounced sku'n ) was saved until last.

The crowning place of many ancient Scottish kings

amongst them, Macbeth & later Robert the Bruce in 1306

We stood & imagined the echoes of ancient voices at moot hill

as the kings sat upon the Stone of Scone

to receive their crowns. We strolled under the Autumn sun glittered on lawns

where once stood the village of Scone. Sadly landscaping in 1802

meant moving the whole village 2 miles away! The only reminders

now are the Mercat cross & mossy stones in the ancient graveyard.

We wandered amongst gardens discovering albino peacocks

stopped in at the coffee shop for warm drinks

& then tried to lose ourselves in the beech maze.

All in all a wonderfully relaxing weekend away.

Time out for Mr O & i, from all the other things

we find ourselves being from day to day.

the crimson & gold hued treasures of Autumn

have slowly seeped into my very bones

and out through my pencils & brushes

"am foghar" my gaelic "autumn"

piece is begun, at last!

Thoughts of crisp woodland meanderings

and the wee creatures hidden there.

I am wanting to capture their wildness

in my drawings & tiny (unfinished) sculptures

It is nearly over, where do the hours disappear to?

We are safely snuggled into our wee house

as the dark draws round us,

finding plenty to keep our fingers busy

& with a whole heap of faerie stories to read.

My mr o is a travelling the highlands on & off

making the hours we share ever more precious.

Very soon i am off on an adventure with my girls

to the far flung corners of Marrakesh!!

So excited, my dreams are filled with

Arabian nights, dusky souks

story tellers, dancers & musicians

i can hardly wait!!

hibernation & hunting . . .

It's been so long since i was here last

and oh how I have missed you all!

But I have felt such a need, these past weeks

just to sit quietly, to listen & to watch.

My precious inspiration went into hibernation.

It was i think, waiting for the dust of hectic summer

to settle back into place, before peeping out again!

Whilst the sun was still high in the bright blue sky,

we went a-hunting for my inspiration.

Along the way discovering such heart lifting delights as

ancient Celtic carvings at Tullie House,

hilltop carvings at Dalbeattie &Kirroughtree,

we hiking over the patchwork, heather strew hills,

hunting & found these glorious scottish landscapes

that stretched as far as our eyes could see,

one season has rolled into the next, now it is begun

the wonderful dusky change of hues that is,

my absolute favourite of them all, Autumn.

I am at last, feeling refreshed & full of ideas again

i have found my old, dear friend, my inspiration!

So i am away to pick up my dusty paintbrushes
but just before i go
i just have to share the utmost highlight of my days.

my fingers have been a making

picking flowers to dry to make my faerie cards

moulding clay to bring to life figures in my paintings

and why have my fingers been so busy. . .

for this our red-den family project,

that got put on hold for a wee while when

fate stepped in & took me off on different paths.

but at last (oh so exciting) this weekend it finally happened

homes have been found for every little thing

we are slowly but surely settling in

with the coming of these fresh spring days

i have found myself busy as a bee, a cleaning & a sorting . . .

(moving home is the perfect time i suppose)

i have been dusting down my thoughts, my hopes, my dreams

these are days for budding new ideas, new imaginings, i have been planning & designing our new wee home

painting & re-vamping, giving things a new lease of life

i really dont like throwing things away,

i am a bit of a scavenger too, some of my favourite

places are second hand stores. a treasure found costing very little

gives me so much more joy than something newly bought

my precious paints and pencils are all sadly packed away

my unfinished paintings shall have to wait (and there are so many!)

i can't quite concentrate in such upheaval & mayhem

so i shall succumb to these times of change,

another child just having flown the nest

after so many years i shall feel the empty spaces

of the tiniest miracle baby girl just 1lb 3oz,

we mused over poetic clues to find the treasures

im feeling very "mossy" just now

i seem to have ground to a bit of a halt

im sitting back and ruminating

examining my world in the greatest of detail

wishing on rainbows & holding my breath

taking it step by step

thankful for my family, my health, my life

wondering what is around the next corner

i have been ever so slightly pre-occupied this wee last wee while, there has been a flurry of activity some good, some not so. i have had . . . one daughter winning the scottish apprentice awards, yay! another passing exams with flying colours, wonderful. a son choosing his career subjects, oh my! Then we had a day of delicious candle making with my lovely family, smiles & laughter & much silliness.

Then i had a bit of a fright when the black ice sent car & me spinning off the road & bouncing into a stone dyke (no damage . . . .to me that is) then, last but by no means least we have felt extremely sad when we learnt that the cottage will be ours for only 2 months longer, and a new wee home we have to find.

the perfect start to our christmas week

two weeks have disappeared in a blurry eyed haze

whilst i have mostly slept & dreamt the strangest of dreams

for the oddest of bugs knocked me right off my feet,

leaving me feeling as giddy as a . . .goat??

a wonderful excuse (whilst recovering) to catch up on reading

to doze & doodle & drink endless cups of tea

i discovered this hauntingly beautiful book, the stolen child

an ethereal tale of changelings hidden deep in the woods.

i was reminded of the beautiful poem by william yeats

& of course one of my most favourite & wonderful songs

of the same name by loreena mckennitt

a sweet surprise parcel arrived on my doorstep too

from a dear blog friend, jasmine of natures whispers

it brought such a smile to my face for in it were

this delicate felted tree made from natural fibres & dyes

& a bundle of other thoughtful lovelies,

a knot work purse, heather & shells & all sorts

later we found the 13th century st marys church in berkeley

with medieval wall paintings that would once have glowed

and jeweled colours in its stained glass

painted bright by the sun's rays

the resting place of the very last jester in england a trove of treasures we unearthed on our travels

complete with a visit to see my eldest
all in all we had a wonderful time away

a wonderful time we had last week

a week that began with my birthday

& ended with adventures in beautiful Bath & beyond

discovering the wonderful roman baths

& roman mosaic with a celtic touch

minute carved stones fallen from the rings of bathers of old

unearthed from ancient drains - the storied they could tella gorgons head, once head aloft on a pediment high

the sun rays perhaps symbolising the heat of the sacred springsthree celtic mother goddesses wearing their pleated skirts
the sun shone & the skies were so blue

as we ended our first day of exploring

patterns man made, going back to nature

and tucked away in the oldest part

a carved & crumbling piece of granite dated 1792, the final resting place of

William "Billy" Marshall

it is said he was 12o years when he died

i set off home as the sun was setting

to discover more

of customs & tales woven around coins & headstones & such

some say the coins are to pay the ferryman to take the soul across the river Styx

some that the copper represents good luck

in fishing communities men wore a gold hoop in an ear

so if the ship went down the ferryman could be paid

as coins were in short supply due to poverty

perhaps it was the books i have been dipping into lately

tales told of the old ways of the Scottish Gypsies/ Travellers perhaps it was remembering a dear friend who is soon off on a
delicious, horse drawn, gypsy caravan holiday around ireland

perhaps it was coming across the work of helen musselwhite
and her delicate piece entitled "gypsy caravan" perhaps it was "gypsea tea" a delicious blog by a like minded lass
that led me to les-verdines , gypsy inspired lovelies to sigh over
perhaps it was the oh so sweet, long ago murmer of a memory

grandma singing the "wraggle taggle gypsies" song to me

(the song that led me to fall in love with the gypsies

gypsy clothes , gypsy songs, gypsy travels)

perhaps that is what inspired my gypsy dancer

my gypsy within

who loves to dance bare foot under the moon

to walk in the wild open places, to wander under the cool green trees

just old bear & me. . . . a little too quiet . . for my two have been far away avisiting
perhaps that is why i was inspired to do "the hug"below! i have moved my own studio about (again)

but oops i didnt do my back much good . . . leaving my lovely mom to paint the "red-den" studio
& put up the hanging rails & dad to lay the new floor!

at last i began working on some of my "family tree" ideas

so fascinated by geneology & tracing lines far back into history
names of folks long forgotten patiently waiting to be found but, oh i could do with a little help, please if you could...

a programme on the radio today

about the book "masquerade" (do you remember it?)

bought back happy memories

the beautifully illustrated "masquerade"

by kit williams was published in 1979

it was a tale of the moon & her love for the sun

hidden amongst the wonderful paintings were

clues to a real treasure hunt to find a golden hare

i was 17 back then & enthralled by this unique book

mom & i spent hours trying to solve those riddles.

in '82 a second book "untitled"was published

this riddle being to find the books name

i treasure my precious copies of both books

for their exquisite paintings,

the incredible details & hidden clues

& because it was these very books that

began my fascination with allegory & symbolism

oh my its july already

i meant to tell of last weeks happenings!

struggling with my painting in progress

"queen of the night"

a garden path at last ready

for visitors to the "red-den" (nearly there!)

a laughter filled 25th birthday
for my red haired lassie
travels to glasgow delivering a poorly applemac
& my wee bit o' self indulgence (above)

summery wanderings along the sunbleached sands

with a little dog called coco

then another new week . .

all creatures great & small

at first i think i am quite alone

yet as i work away in the garden,

these tiny creatures i find

delicately cloaked ermine moths

armour clad dor beetles

spikey caterpillars munching leaves

"may bugs" or cockchafer beetles
distant relative of the regal scarab

and more than plenty of . . . snails....

the sea was calling . . .

the sea was calling, singing its soothing song

we picked up our feet & made for the shore

an early morning walk in a puff of cool air

we spied the promise of autumn blackberries

tiny faerie petals nodding in the breeze

delicate wild roses sweet scented

returning home with calmness restored

inspired by nature to do more designs

this book was a present from a very dear friend

she knows me oh so very well

for i loved it at once

with its tiny, delicate costumes

delicious layout & illustrations

sumptuous colours & use of all things faerieish

bringing back memories of a long ago time

designing my own children's fancy dress clothes

take a peep here faerie-ality to gasp again in delight

at the wonderful work of david ellwand,

then look forward in anticipation to the soon to be released

the "red-den" opening is creeping closer . . .

there has been much list making, sorting outtidying up & finishing off in moms beautiful garden

(for it is at moms that our open studio is to be) laying scrunchy gravel paths

that wind around the house building wide sloping steps

that lead to flower beds so lovingly made

then it has been home to finish off my fathers day owl

more painting & framing of prints & endless cups of tea

i think a wee whirlwind has passed through my own studio!

of course, we did find time for a family bbq

strawberries & cream & catching up with friends

time out, treasure & t-pots

another week passed in a bit of a blur

with studio preperations, working, etc, etc . . . the only artwork making an appearance was

the odd journal scribble & frustration was setting in . . . precious time out was required . . .

time out hunting charity shops for treasure. what did i find . . .a delicate "ocra" vase tucked in a corner, just waiting to be found

a worn old papier mache, hand painted pencil? box, both under £5!

my lovely lass & partner are up for a visit this week

and it was "time out" again to Dalton pottery to paint t-pots !!
